Opening Day

Fat Guys Running Marathons is back for another season!

I know you’ve been missing the witty fat jokes and mediocre running advice…well don’t worry…there’s much more where that came from.

Off Season Report
This off season has been a long four month lay off from serious (and usually non-serious) training. I’ve been running off and on through the winter, primarily on the treadmill, but I’ve found I can only take so many miles of the soul-crushing monotony of running long distances in a six foot by three foot cage.

Some of you may know that I also officiate basketball during the winter. Three to four nights a week of running up and down the court may add up to a respectable amount of steps and “mileage,” but the movements and physical demands of officiating and long-distance running are very different.

The level of ridicule is a little different too. I’ve yet to be yelled or cursed at while running on the paths or roads…I can’t say that about running around the gym.

Outside of basketball officiating and some sporadic treadmill jogs, I also logged a number of miles strolling around the incredible cities of Italy in February. Twenty miles a day? Lug a suitcase while racing to the train station through crowded foreign streets? No problem when you are doing it in the midst of these kind of sites…

That’s the Grand Canal in Venice. My girlfriend and I did the northern loop of Italy for a winter getaway including the cities of Rome, Florence, Pisa, Venice, and Milan. It was eight days in a fat guy paradise of pizza, pasta, and a gelato place every thirty steps.

To cap it off…the Florence leg of the trip included an extra highlight…an Italian engagement for this fat guy.

Spring Training
Alright, alright…enough talk about the off season. Let’s get the 2018 season of Fat Guys Running Marathons off and rolling.

Opening day will be next Sunday at the Rock N’ Roll Half Marathon in Raleigh, NC. In a late addition to the field, I’ll be running my first ever half marathon. This run will primarily be used as a training long run as I plan out the rest of my 2018 race schedule.

Look out for a race preview and post-race report for full coverage of opening day. We have a lot of exciting things to look forward to this season including a number of potential new races on the schedule, some custom running events, and new ways to bring Fat Guys Running Marathons to the online world.

Let’s get this started!
